Two East St. Louis clubs were forced to close after two deadly shooting over the weekend.

Corey Starks, 21, of Cahokia was shot and killed early Saturday outside Club Onyx in the 200 block of Collinsville Avenue.

In the same hour, Kendrick Barnes, 29, of St. Louis, was shot and killed outside Club Rio at Ninth Street and Baugh Avenue. East St. Louis police are investigating both cases.

In the meantime, both clubs are shut down after the city revoked their business licenses Saturday.

East St. Louis city leaders said reopening would depend on whether the clubs can prove they are improving security. The city is requiring both Club Onyx and Club Rio to submit reports outlining security plans. Those reports should be submitted this week, said East St. Louis City Manager Robert Betts.

Club Rio spokesperson Jocelyn Raiford met with the chief of East St. Louis Police Monday morning. She said that nearly two dozen security guards operate on any given night at Club Rio. Raiford said the club owner would cooperate to reopen the club.

Club Rio is open Friday through Sunday from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Betts said he thinks the city should consider requiring clubs to close at an earlier time.
