The St. Louis American learned Saturday that Maida Coleman, D-St. Louis, will drop her bid for the Democratic nomination for state auditor and instead will run for city license collector.

Coleman confirmed the story with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, saying that some Democrats were urging possible backers to withhold contributions to her campaign.

State Democratic officials deny that Coleman’s campaign was being starved for cash.

Coleman told the P-D that by abandoning her auditor campaign, she “would pull together the Democratic naysayers in the state auditor’s race (who) have worked very, very hard against me.”

If Coleman does choose to seek the license collector’s office, it could put her in a showdown with popular city Alderman Mike McMillan (D-19th Ward.)
