Great Rivers Greenway District and CityArchRiver 2015 Foundation are hosting an open house Monday, November 10, to show the public a proposed redesign of Kiener Plaza as part of the CityArchRiver 2015 project. The redesign is a partnership between the two organizations and the City of St. Louis, which owns Kiener Plaza.

“It’s our goal to improve the visitor experience at Kiener as a major civic gathering space. It is a central part of creating a seamless, connected park experience from downtown to the riverfront through the CityArchRiver project,” said Susan Trautman, executive director of Great Rivers Greenway. “We want to hear from the public to see if we are heading in the right direction to accomplish that goal.”

The project will be funded through a mix of public and private funding. Great Rivers Greenway will oversee construction of the project and the public funding portion coming from Proposition P revenue. Proposition P was approved by St. Louis City and County voters in 2013 to fund improvements to the Gateway Arch grounds and its surroundings and local parks and trails. CityArchRiver 2015 Foundation has funded the design of the project and will provide private funding for construction. The Foundation will also partner with the city to maintain and operate Kiener Plaza moving forward.

“Through the proposed redesign, we want to make Kiener Plaza a great gathering place for play, celebration, and relaxation,” said Maggie Hales, executive director of CityArchRiver 2015 Foundation. “We’re excited to get the design in front of the public and see what they think.”

The proposed redesign includes a large event lawn in front of the Old Courthouse, shade gardens, a playground, interactive water features, and a bicycle parking grove. The design also leaves space for a future visitor center.
