Free tax preparation for St. Louis area residents will be held on Wednesday, March 6. To qualify, annual earnings must be $55,000 or less.

Comptroller Darlene Green has brought PNC Bank and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) together to host a Free Tax Preparation event at the William J. Harrison Education Center. The address is 3140 Cass Avenue, across from Vashon High School. Taxes will be prepared between 4:30-8:30 p.m.

The event is being held in the evening as a convenience for working adults and families. Taxpayers should arrive early and come prepared. They should bring identification, social security cards, W-2’s, 1099 forms, a copy of last year’s taxes and appropriate banking information for their refund.

Tax professionals will prepare and electronically file all 2012 Federal and State returns, including those in Illinois and other states. In addition, tax preparers will electronically file prior years including 2011, 2010 and 2009 at no cost to residents.

This year’s tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15th. The average cost to have a tax return prepared by a professional is $246 if itemizing deductions, $143 if filing a standard return. This is money that hard-working residents can keep for themselves. Refunds are generally received in less than 21 days, direct deposits can be received within 7 days.
