The St. Louis Public School District was assured more much-needed stability today (Tues., Feb. 22) when the district’s Special Administrative Board announced that Superintendent Kelvin R. Adams had accepted a three-year contract extension.

Adams is now under contract through June 30, 2014 and will have provided the district with six consecutive school years of leadership of he fulfills the contract’s terms.

“In just over two years, Dr. Adams has improved academics and stabilized the district’s finances,” said SAB Vice President Melanie Adams. “He has the St. Louis Public School District moving in the right direction.”

Adams led a national search that brought Adams to the district as superintendent in the fall of 2008. During Adams’ tenure, the unaccredited district has increased its number of Missouri School Improvement Points from three to five. It also has seen improvement across all grade levels on standardized state tests and increases in the number of schools earning Adequate Yearly Progress.

Adams was superintendent in 2010 when city voters overwhelming approved $155 million in new bonds to upgrade district facilities. On his watch, the district closed a $56.5 million budget gap in 2010 -2011 and is on pace to end the school year with a balanced budget.

“I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve the students, staff and community of St. Louis,” said Adams. “Although we are making progress, we still have much work to accomplish.”
