Four St. Louis police officers were charged Thursday after an internal affairs investigation accused them of forging documents to collect thousands of dollars in overtime pay for work they did not perform.

Officers Brian Jost, Michael Langsdorf and Emin Talic face felony stealing and forgery charges, according to a release by the police department. Officer Daniel O’Brien is charged with felony forgery and misdemeanor stealing.

“Law enforcement officers in this country are granted a tremendous amount of power to help keep our community safe and uphold the law,” said St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner. “It is instances like this, when police officers abuse their power and violate the public’s trust, that have contributed to the current crisis in police-community relations.

I hope these charges today send a clear message that those who choose violate the public’s trust will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. “

Sentencing for the felony charges range from one day to seven years in prison and a fine up to $5000. Sentencing for the misdemeanor stealing charge ranges from up to one year and a fine up to $1000.
