Gov. Jay Nixon endorsed U.S. Wm. Lacy Clay today in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District.
“For over 25 years, Lacy Clay has been a powerful voice for working families and a tireless advocate for the people of St. Louis,” Nixon said in a statement.
“And throughout his long career in public service, I’ve considered Lacy a close personal friend. He’s the right man to continue serving the people of the 1st Congressional District and I fully support his re-election.”
Clay, an incumbent first elected to represent the district in 2001, is being challenged by Russ Carnahan, whose 3rd Congressional District was redrawn with a large Republican majority. Carnahan filed against Clay, an incumbent Democrat, rather than for the open 2nd District seat vacated by Todd Akin, who is running for U.S. Senate.
“This wonderful endorsement from Governor Nixon means so much to me because we have been good friends and colleagues for many years. During our time serving together in the Missouri State Senate, Jay Nixon worked side-by-side with me to protect and grow good jobs and to strengthen Missouri families,” Clay said in a statement.
“As a progressive with backbone who always puts the 1st District first, I’m proud to fight for Missouri’s best interests in Washington. I am truly honored to have the Governor’s support for my re-election. Governor Nixon is leading Missouri with strength, energy and integrity. I thank him for his endorsement, and I look forward to supporting his re-election in November.”
Mayor Francis G. Slay, St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, the Missouri State AFL-CIO and the St. Louis Labor Council have previously endorsed Clay.
The primary is Tuesday, August 7.
