The Mayor of Kirkwood will be discharged Wednesday from St. John’s Mercy Medical Center where he has been a patient since he was shot twice in the head during a zoning meeting at city hall February 7.
Mayor Mike Swoboda will be moved to a rehab facility, which is still part of St. John’s, to continue his recovery, said Family Spokesperson Ton Noonan, during an afternoon press conference earlier this afternoon (Tuesday).
The mayor’s condition has improved greatly. He is breathing on his own and started eating food Monday. The swelling in the mayor’s face has gone down and his features have returned, according to Noonan and Swoboda, Jr.
If all goes well, Mayor Swoboda could be released from the rehab facility in three to four weeks to two months. It may take as long as a year for the mayor to be fully recovered.
Charles Lee Cookie Thornton shot Mayor Swoboda and six other people during the meeting. Two police officers and two council members died.
