Nearly 1,500 messages of text message correspondence between former mayor of Detroit and his ex-lover on their city pagers are to be made public. A judge has ordered the release of approximately 1,400 text messages sent or received by Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny said today (Wed., Mar. 4) the messages between ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty are public records.

The messages were part of the criminal case against Beatty. She and Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to committing obstruction of justice to cover up their affair. They lied while testifying in a civil lawsuit in 2007.

The judge suggested the messages may shed light on government misconduct. The messages are to be released Monday unless an appeals court intervenes.
