A man who had a physical altercation with former Vashon High School basketball coach Floyd Irons six years ago was scheduled to file a lawsuit against him this week in connection with that incident.

But 21-year-old Timothy Bacon was gunned down by three assailants late Friday evening in St. Louis. Witnesses say one of the men walked up to Bacon’s motionless body and shot him twice after a hail of bullets felled him.

Jerome Dobson, Irons’ attorney issued a statement saying, “we deplore this senseless loss of his life and express our deepest sympathy to his family.”

Dobson told the American on Monday that police had not contacted him or Irons “in connection with this senseless crime.”

Irons did not know of the pending lawsuit, according to Dobson.

School board president Veronica O’Brien had also recently sought to have the incident reexamined by federal authorities, even though Irons had been cleared of wrongdoing after the Feb. 16, 2000 altercation at Vashon.

Bacon was charged with assault following the fracas with Irons. Last April, he was charged with resisting arrest for allegedly violating a restraining order filed by the mother of one of his two children.

Bacon’s attorney, Anthony Bruning, said the suit would have sought damages from the SLPS board of education and Irons.
