The St. Louis County NAACP planned a press conference today to discuss its response to a police pursuit that began in Maplewood and ended in north St. Louis.

After fleeing police, allegedly trying to ram two police cars and fleeing on foot, witnesses said officers caught the suspect. What happened at that point, say some witnesses, might have been beyond the law.

A suspect was taken into custody amidst allegations by some witnesses that excessive force might have been used.

Maplewood police pursued a suspect driving a GMC conversion van into the city of St. Louis around 7 a.m. today (Jan. 30).

The chase proceeded south on McCausland, east on Arsenal, north on Kingshighway and then east on Page before near North Florissant and Pleasant.

Witnesses say the officers then beat the suspect with their fists and kicked him. The suspect was transported to a hospital and is in custody.

Maplewood police were scheduled to release a formal statement at 10:30 a.m. today.
