Interstate 55 opened about 2:30 a.m. Friday more than six hours after a huge piece of concrete fell off the Delor Street overpass and onto the interstate.

A section of concrete fell across all four lanes of the interstate about 8 p.m. Thursday. A car traveling northbound crashed into the concrete. The driver was taken to a St. Louis area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Crews cleaned up the interstate and opened it about 2:30 a.m.

Engineers from the Missouri Department of Transportation inspected portions of the Delor Street overpass throughout Thursday night to determine its structural integrity. It remains closed to cars and pedestrians. No word on when it might reopen.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collapse.
