John Conyers

(CNN) – Rep. John Conyers  announced that he will retire today. The Democrat, who is the longest-serving member currently in the House, was under pressure to step down amid several sexual harassment allegations. Conyers has denied wrongdoing in at least two of the cases.

“I am retiring today. And I want everyone to know how much I appreciate the support that…incredible, undiminished support I’ve received across the years of my supporters, not only in my district but across the country as well,” Conyers said.

Rep. Conyers is facing several public allegations of sexual harassmentThe House Ethics Committee announced last week it has opened an investigation into allegations.

However, he said today that despite all this, he is confident in his legacy.

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through now. This, too, shall pass. I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children,” he said.

He then endorsed his son as his replacement.

With the resignation of Rep. John Conyers, it falls to Gov. Rick Snyder to call a special election to fill the seat. He has broad discretion on when he can do this, including pairing it with the 2018 election in November should he choose.

Per the secretary of state’s office, the call for special election will include a primary date as well. Republican, Democrat, and Libertarian parties will run in the primary. Minor parties would run a convention to nominate someone should they choose to participate.

According to Michigan law, ballots must be sent out at least 45 days before the election to members of the military serving overseas.
