Unlike the 2020 Democratic primary for U.S. president, which looks like an old-school wrestling free for all, the 2020 Democratic primary for Missouri governor gained sharp early focus on Tuesday, July 2 when state Senator Scott Sifton (D-St. Louis County) endorsed state Auditor Nicole Galloway for governor.
“There was never any doubt that I was going to be with Nicole if she ran, and I made that clear from the beginning to all who asked,” Sifton said in a statement, pointing to Galloway’s record as state auditor and success running statewide in 2018 as reasons for supporting her.
Galloway previously filed Senate legislation written by Galloway providing for greater transparency in public bidding.
“Republicans may be disappointed to learn Missouri Democrats are united going into 2020,” Sifton stated, “but I assure you their disappointments are only beginning.”
The Democratic nominee will likely face the incumbent, Gov. Mike Parson, in the general election. Parson was not elected governor, but took the seat when Eric Greitens resigned. A former sheriff and cow farmer, Parson has been elected lieutenant governor.
