Social Security Administration Commissioner Michael J. Astrue will be in St.
Louis Monday, Aug. 2 to dedicate a new hearing center for claim appeals.
The National Hearing Center will be co-located with the New Case Assistance
Center and the Midwest Training Center in Building 100 at the Goodfellow
Federal Center in St. Louis.
The three facilities bring nearly 200 new jobs to St. Louis. The project
was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and was
completed in just ten months.
The SSA administrative appeals process operates under the Office of
Disability Adjudication and Review and is one of the largest administrative
judicial systems in the world. Agency Administrative Law Judges conduct
hearings and issue more than a half million hearing and appeal dispositions
each year. This is Social Security’s fifth National Hearing Center and will
help reduce the nationwide backlog of cases currently awaiting a hearing.
