The Superman ride at Six Flags St. Louis is shutdown this morning as a safety precaution following an accident at a similar ride at a Six Flags in Louisville, Kentucky.
A teenage girl’s legs were severed above the ankle while on a thrill ride at a popular amusement park on Thursday, park officials said.
The accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on the Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, said Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg.
It is unclear at what point during the ride the girl, 13, was injured, Goldberg said. She was taken to a hospital, but there was no immediate word on her condition.
The Louisville ride lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops 154 feet, reaching a speed of 54 mph, according to the park’s Web site.
Witnesses say a cable broke loose and sliced through the girl’s legs.
The ride has been shut down indefinitely while park officials investigate what caused the accident. The rest of the park remained open.
There is a similar ride at the Six Flags in Eureka. While the name and theme is the same, it is not known if the local ride was built by the same manufacturer or uses the same parts at the Louisville ride. There are no reports of incidents involving the Superman ride at the Six Flags over MidAmerica park.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident in Louisville.
