The city of St. Louis ranks third in “City Crime Rankings,” the annual report published by Morgan Quitno Press of Lawrence, Kan.
St. Louis trailed only Camden, N.J., and Detroit. Camden was named the most dangerous city for the second year in a row. St. Louis was first in 2002 and has remained in the Top 10 the four years.
The assessment is based on a city’s rates last year in murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft, as reported to the FBI. St. Louis’ police department had to adjust its first reported number of rapes to a higher level, which probably added to the crime rate.
The firm scores cities against national averages in each category and adds the scores, weighing each crime the same.
The firm’s president, Scott Morgan, said “the process may not be perfect, they are one of the only ways to compare crime in different cities.”
The safest state is North Dakota and the most dangerous Nevada, according to Quitno.
