Yesterday (Tues., Mar. 23) a number of area officials spoke at the STAR (St. Louis Alliance for Reentry) Summit, a day long event about different programs for ex-offenders who need to learn how to become productive members of society.

St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, City of St. Louis Police Chief Daniel Isom, St. Louis County Police Chief Timothy Fitch all spoke to the issue.

Other police officers, state sheriffs, correctional workers and advocates who help the ex-offenders prepare to return to society came out to discuss and plan how to improve programs.

A crowd of 275 attended the event, which was principally organized by Area Resources for Community and Human Services (ARCHS).

Culinary workers who recently graduated from a program at ARCHS attended the summit, to provide an understanding on what ex-offenders go through.

ARCHS Chief Executive Officer Wendell E. Kimbrough said, “The ex-offenders still need assistance and don’t know the simple things like tying a tie and some don’t even have a G.E.D.”
