The legacy of the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm will be discussed during the third “Statehouse Sisters” panel discussion at noon Friday Feb. 4 in Century Room C at the Millennium Student Center on the University of Missouri n St. Louis campus.
State Sen. Rita Days and state Reps. Esther Haywood, Robin Wright Jones and Juanita Head Walton will lead the third annual Sue Shear Institute of Women in Public Life panel discussion.
Chisholm became the first African American woman to serve in the United States Congress in 1969.
A New York Democrat, she was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1983. She served in the New York State Assembly from 1964 to 1968. Chisholm campaigned for, but did not win, the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination.
Chisholm died at age 80 on Jan. 3.
