The St. Louis County Police Department wants to attract more African Americans to be part of the police force. The department is hosting testing and consultative sessions on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 21 at 10 a.m. at Hazelwood East Middle School, located at 1865 Dunn Rd.

Applicants should wear appropriate attire for participation in physical activities, i.e. gym shorts, T-shirt, running shoes and gym socks.

The department offers a benefits package that includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance. It also provides a pension plan, tuition reimbursement and a starting salary of $48,256 annually.

At the sessions, candidates must undergo a physical training assessment and written exam. After completing these steps, the applicants will discuss the entire hiring process with recruiters. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age or reach their 21st birthday by the time of completion of the academy training course.

There is no residency requirement, but applicants must be a citizen of the United States.

Applicants must have either an associate’s degree or 64 semester credit hours from an accredited university or college (with a cumulative average letter grade of “C” or a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) OR a high school diploma or GED with one year full-time prior police experience or two years of military service (police experience can be in a civilian position with the St. Louis County Police Department designated by the chief as part of the department’s Cadet Program).

Out-of-state police officers/military peace officers who possess or obtain State of Missouri POST class “A” certification will be evaluated in conjunction with their education/work experience. Visit the POST website at www.dps.mo.gov/POST/Main/POSTForms.htm for additional information.

Applicant’s weight must be in proportion to height according to department standards. Minimum department standard for vision is 20/200 in each eye, uncorrected; correctable to 20/20 in each eye.

Applicant must be free from conviction of a felony. A Class A misdemeanor conviction will be cause for immediate dismissal from the process, unless otherwise directed by the chief.

Applicant must possess a valid State Driver’s License by date of employment and have five or less points charged against his/her driving record at time of application.

If a military veteran, applicant must have an “Honorable” discharge, or a discharge “Under Honorable Conditions.”

All police applicants are required to take a physical agility assessment examination. Recruits are required to pass the physical agility examination at mid-term and at graduation as a condition of attendance and graduation.
