SLPS school board member Donna Jones, activist Eric Vickers and talk show host Lizz Brown organized a group of about a dozen SLPS students for a sit-in at the Mayor’s office. The group arrived at City Hall Wednesday around 3 p.m. and spent the evening camped out in the office. Clad in yellow t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase ‘Please Don’t Slay Our Future’, the students came prepared with a list of ten demands for the mayor.

“The Mayor is not illiterate,” said Roosevelt senior Howard Hughes. “From what I hear he is a very intelligent man. He can just show his face and clear up at least four of these demands.”

“I hope the Mayor will sit down and talk to us,” 15-year-old Devin Jackson, a sophomore at Gateway High School said. “Our voices haven’t been heard.”

The Mayor has not yet agreed to meet with the students to discuss their demands. And the protest appeared peaceful until local businessman Walle Amusa showed up to offer his support and assistance, which drew the ire of Brown and other adults.

“The only thing you can do for us is leave,” Brown said to Amusa before he was escorted out of the office.
