A St. Louis social studies teacher faces third-degree assault charges after she allegedly touched a student in an inappropriate manner.
Officers arrested Rachel Sims, 51, who teaches at Dewey International Studies Elementary School Friday.
St. Louis police said Sims grabbed a student in the neck and shoulder area.
After the teacher was removed from the classroom, school officials said the child’s mother called police and Sims was arrested shortly afterwards.
Sims remained in jail until late Friday night.
The city school system and the teacher’s union are investigating.
School officials said Sims is a veteran teacher who has worked at Dewey since the 1980’s. They said she has a spotless record.
Sims is suspended with pay.
