United Way 2-1-1 and four local tax coalitions have teamed to offer free tax preparation to St. Louis area families.
Families with a household income of less than $53,000 in 2014 are eligible to receive the service, which helped nearly 19,000 people last year.
Interested individuals may contact United Way 2-1-1 or 1-800-427-4626 to get additional information on qualifications for free help, locations, dates and the related documents (listed below) clients should bring to the sites. The sites operate by appointment or on a walk-in basis.
“The partnership between United Way 2-1-1 and our local tax coalitions is extremely valuable to our region,” said Debbie Irwin, community economic development director, United Way of Greater St. Louis. “Working families often pay unnecessary fees for tax preparation, including rapid refund, electronic filing fees and check cashing fees. It’s our hope that we will be able to alleviate a financial burden for a number of families this tax season and ensure they get all of the tax credits they qualify for.”
In 2014, 774 volunteers prepared federal tax returns at free tax preparation sites located throughout the region through United Way’s tax coalition partnership. Families received more than $21 million in refunds, including $7.3 million in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refunds.
The assistance focuses on individuals or families who qualify for EITC, which is a federal tax credit designed to help people increase their financial stability through numerous ways. According to the Brookings Institute, the average national EITC refund in 2013 was $2,254.
United Way’s tax coalition partners include Gateway EITC Community Coalition, Friendly Community Tax Coalition, National Association of Black Accountants, and St. Louis Tax Assistance Program. United Way provides information and referral to all free income tax sites in the greater St. Louis region through its United Way 2-1-1 call center.
Locations, dates and times for Saturday walk-in sites are listed below for the free tax preparation services for those with a 2014 household income of less than $53,000. For all other locations and times, call United Way 2-1-1 or 1-800-427-4626.
