Educator and community activist Antoine Gilkey, 36 years old, died February 18, 2005 at St. Louis University Hospital after succumbing to a heart attack.

Mr. Gilkey was an avid advocate for public housing residents, often working side by side with his mother, Bertha Gilkey, who in 1976 helped to establish the Cochran Gardens Tenant Management Corporation, a tenant board designed to govern the complex that is located north of downtown St. Louis.

He was a member of the St. Louis Authority Board of Commissioners, the Cochran Gardens Tenant Management Corporation and was a math teacher at Blewett, Normandy Middle Schools, and Roosevelt High.

The funeral was held February 25, 2005 at Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Continuing his legacy, the family plans to establish an education fund in Mr. Gilkey’s name.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother; a sister, Yvette Gilkey of Alabama; and his fiancee, Adrienne Litiskas of St. Louis.
