Bennie E. Chambers died April 3, 2006 due to complications of diabetes.
He was born September 24, 1936 in Port Gibson, Miss., to the late Martin and Ruby Chambers. He graduated from the Claiborne County Training School (K-12) in 1956. Mr. Chambers later attended Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University) for one year before moving to St. Louis at the invitation of his uncle, the late James Braxton, in 1958.
He worked mainly for three employers: Wm. B. Appel Upholstering Co., 905 Liqour and the Landau Carpet Co., working as an upholsterer, pickup and delivery driver and dispatcher.
Mr. Chambers is survived by his longtime companion, Margie Currie; his son and his wife, Bennie Currie and Celeste Garrett, of Chicago; his daughter, Angela Currie, of St. Louis; his son, Barry Currie, of St. Louis; and his son, Elvin Chambers, of St. Louis; seven grandchildren, Glen Currie, of St. Louis, Martin Garrett-Currie and Elizabeth Garrett-Currie, both of Chicago; Ben Lewis, Angel Lewis, Samuel Lewis, and Sanaa Lewis, all of St. Louis; Barry Currie Jr., and Ayana Currie, of Olivette, Mo.; two sisters, Ruth (Eugene) Moore, of Bolton, Miss., and Claudia Chambers, of Chicago. He is further survived by one uncle and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert, and sisters Ruth Darden and Lillie Ruth Clark.
A memorial service for Bennie E. Chambers will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 15, Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services, 7814 S. Broadway. Dr. Roland Booker, pastor, Abundant Fellowship Church of God, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in his name for the American Diabetes Association.
