Born in Oswego, Kansas on April 8, 1927, Carl C. Landis was the eighth of Willard and Inez Landis’ ten children. He graduated from Oswego High School in 1944 and went on to Kansas State Teachers College, now known as Pittsburgh State University. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1948 and was inducted in to the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Honor Society. He later continued his studies and received a master’s degree in mathematics in 1953. He was offered a position teaching math and physics at the newly integrated Soldan High School where he worked for 8 years. During this time, he met Inez Edwards, a teacher and reading specialist. They married in 1960 and later had two daughters, Carla Patrice and Sherri Denise. He left Soldan to teach at Vashon High School where he eventually became assistant principal of instruction. He then accepted the position of principal at Northwest High School where he stayed until it closed. He finished his career with the St. Louis Public Schools as principal of Central Visual and Performing Arts. Carl retired in 1999 and was awarded the first Leadership Award for the Central Visual and Performing Arts’ Wall of Fame in 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and all his siblings. He is survived by his daughters, Carla Evans and Sherri Walker (Anthony); three granddaughters, Sally Evans, Laura Evans, and Darcie Walker; two grandsons, Anthony and Carl Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loved ones.
