Edgar Burton Holloway Sr., a retired lieutenant with the St. Louis City Police Department, died Sunday, February 27, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Clayton, Missouri. He was 94.
Mr. Holloway was born July 17, 1910 in Scuba, Mississippi and moved to St. Louis when he was 17. There he met Willetta Fantroy. The two were married April 18, 1927, and to this union 11 children were born.
As a young man, Mr. Holloway worked for Garavelli’s Restaurant and then as a milkman for the St. Louis Dairy Company. He began working with the St. Louis Police Department on March 6, 1944. Over the years, he served the department as a detective, sergeant and lieutenant. Mr. Holloway retired from the police department in 1975 after 31 years of service.
Mr. Holloway was the longest active and oldest member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by five daughters and one son: Bettye Thomas (Leyland), Dorothy Miller, Marlene Tatum(Robert), Delores Henry(Harry), James Holloway(Marion) and Denise Davis(Ron); and over 100 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Willetta Fantroy Holloway, his loving wife of 74 years, preceded him in death, as did four children (Mary Lillian Harvey, Edgar B. Holloway, Jr., Johnny Holloway, and Shirley Edwards).
Visitation will be held from 5-9m on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Wade Funeral Home, 4828 Natural Bridge Avenue, St. Louis, MO. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005 at True Light Missionary Baptist Church, 2838 James “Cool Papa” Bell Avenue, St. Louis. Burial will be at St. Peters Cemetery, Lucas Hunt Road.
