In Loving Memory of Elvin Holmes Sr.

July 1, 1921—July 8, 2012

Referred to as “Holmes” or “Buddy” by family and friends. He was born in Clarksdale, MS and later moved to St. Louis. Holmes was very kind, loving and supportive to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved his family. Holmes was truly a believer in the Lord. His faith was very important to him. Before he became ill, be was a faithful member of Tri-Union AME Church. He served in several different capacities. He was on the Board of Trustees, a choir member and on Men’s Day, the members looked forward to Mr. Holmes’ famous homemade peach cobbler and sweet potato pie. Holmes was also the church handyman, and he took pride in helping because he loved the Lord and cared deeply about the church.

He retired from Krey Packing Co. when the plant closed. He was very well liked by his fellow co-workers and friends. He had a great sense of humor, and he was a hard worker.

Holmes was a great friend to many. He helped many people in his neighborhood for 50 years. He was a businessman, and he knew how to make and save money, so he was always there helping his family financially, especially his children, grandchildren and close friends. He had a big heart and always tried to make sure his family was happy and financially independent.

Holmes suffered from a severe stroke and a broken hip, and he never fully recovered. He had been sick for seven years, and a patient for the last three at Willowbroke/Benchmark Rehabilitation Center.  Holmes will truly be missed. He had very broad shoulders that we all leaned on.

His last request was that he be cremated, and no funeral service be held. That was just like him. He didn’t want to put anyone out of their way.  We celebrate his life in our hearts and memories, but he deserves so much more. In his last days, he was at peace as he transitioned from this life. Elvin Holmes is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and close friends.

Love you, Grandpa. Rest in Peace.
