Georgia Randolph-Harper, who faithfully served her community and church, entered into rest in her sleep on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 following a long illness. She was 86 years old.
Mrs. Harper was born in Boliver, Tenn., and educated in Jackson, Tenn. She later moved to St. Louis in 1945, where she enriched the lives of many through her community service. As a member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church, Mrs. Harper participated in the church’s Missionary Society, acting as chairman of its Anabel White Circle, which provided clothing for the needy.
As a certified instructor and Chairman of the Mission in Action Committee, she was instrumental in organizing the Pleasant Green Church Food Bank, which provides food and supplies for those in need. She served on the Senior Usher board and Usher’s Alliance, was a member of the Blessed Hope Sunday School, the Tuesday Evening Class, and spent her Wednesdays volunteering at City Hospital. She also participated as a poll organizer for the St. Louis City Board of Election Commissioners.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Harper volunteered for the Girl Scouts of America, who recognized her with several community service awards. As a Girl Scout leader, Mrs. Harper served as a cookie chairman, calendar chairman for District 3 Neighborhood 2, organizer and consultant, camp promoter for Pleasant Green, and was storyteller at the St. Louis Public Libraries for disabled children.
Among the survivors are a daughter, Sarah Whitehead; two sons, Dr. William H. Jones and Gregory L. Jones; a daughter-in-law, Bette Jones; seven grandchildren, Marsha Ector, Michael Ector, Sheila Parker (husband Michael), Ron Whitehead, Jennifer Taylor Jones, Tiffany Jones, and Terese Jones; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Louise Copeland and Gilda Thomas. Another sister, Katie Brown, preceded her in death.
