Alonzo Maurice Gladney was born on August 17, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the youngest of five children born to Henry C. and Annie Belle Gladney. His parents, three sisters: Johnnie Bernice Fisher, Margret Henry, Henryetta Dorsey, and one brother, Charles Gladney, Jr. all preceded him in death.
Alonzo (Lonnie) attended Marshall Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School. He then attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri for two years. On March 27, 1955 Lillian (Lil) Samuels and Alonzo Gladney were married and were later blessed with one daughter, Sybil Pearl Gladney. They remained married for sixty-one years.
At an early age, Alonzo professed faith in Christ and united with Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he became an active member. He was honored to serve a term as Chairman of the Trustee Board.
Alonzo was employed by the United States Postal Service where he worked for over twenty five years. He rose through the ranks and
ultimately joined their management team ending his career as Branch Manager of the Maplewood Post Office from which he retired in 1983. Alonzo also flourished as a real estate investor with Gladney Investments. He cherished being a member of the Royal Vagabonds Club and The St. Louis Set Couples Club.
Alonzo leaves to cherish his memory his wife Lil, daughter Sybil,
sister-in-law, Verlon Gladney, two cousins James Longley and Earnestine Davidson, a host of other relatives and friends, and all of his club members. His bright light lives on in the hearts of all of those he loved.
