Irma Estelle Neal (nee Tisdale), was born February 9, 1909 in Memphis, Tennessee to Alberta Tisdale Wade. Irma was the oldest of four children. Her mother, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
Irma married Nathan Cox Sr. from Greensboro, MS and moved to St. Louis. To this union, four children were born, Vera Jamison, Nathan Cox Jr., Bobby Cox and Ida Mae Pratt. Nathan Cox Sr. and Ida preceded her in death.
Irma was a faithful member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on North Kingshighway. She was known as the “unofficial baker” and served her church in many capacities.
For 20 years, Irma was self-employed. She owned and operated the old Rathsonia (“Rat”) Lounge on North Kingshighway, where she was affectionately called “Nana.” It was the gathering place for some politicians, friends, city and government workers.
Irma was a fun-loving person who never met a stranger. Whereever you saw her, her smile and conversation always captured your attention.
Enriched by her life, she leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, two sons, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Irma donated her body to Saint Louis University Medical School and a memorial service was held in Los Angeles on November 25, 2005.
