Johnny Hemphill, Jr., 56, retired teacher of the St. Louis Public Schools, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Kindred Hospital in Northlake (Chicago), Illinois.

Johnny, a life-long resident of St. Louis, Missouri, began his teaching career in 1980, eventually working at the St. Louis Job Corps Center on Goodfellow Blvd. In 1984, Johnny joined the St. Louis Public Schools as a vocal music teacher at Marshall Elementary. In 1994, he began teaching grades K-5 at Wyman Elementary.

He retired in 1999. His life’s legacy will be his love for education and his passion for music.

A memorial service will be held Friday, May 26 at 7 p.m., at the Friendship Baptist Church, 5597 Etzell, St. Louis, MO. Reliable Funeral Home is in charge.

In addition to his daughter Jonaye, survivors include his siblings, Rhonnie (Margot) Hemphill, Joanne (Don) Wilson, Renay Henderson, Gregory Hemphill, Kenneth Hemphill; and Evelyn Hemphill.
