Marvin Owen Teer Sr, was born on July 22, 1912 in Meridian, Mississippi, the eldest of six children born to the union of William and Minnie Riddle Teer. He departed this world quietly at his home on May 27, 2010, at the age of 97 surrounded by family and friends.
Marvin graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in East St. Louis. He earned a Bachelors degree in education from Illinois State University, a Masters degree in education from the University of Illinois and a Masters degree in administration from St. Louis University. Marvin was employed with the East St. Louis Public Schools, teaching at Lincoln Senior High School and the St. Louis Public Schools where he taught at Vashon High School for 30 years before retiring in 1977.
Marvin was a long time member of The Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church prior to its closing when he became a member of St. Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist Catholic Church.
On December 28,1947, Marvin was united in Holy Matrimony to Vivian France Jarrett and to their union was blessed with one son, Marvin O. Teer, Jr., a municipal judge in St. Louis, Mo. After 54 years of marriage, Vivian preceded him in the arms of the Creator on Mother’s Day, 2004.
Marvin proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army before receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946.
Marvin was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity initiated at Beta Chapter at the University of Illinois in 1936, and long time member of the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter. Marvin was also a Third Degree Knights of Columbus. Throughout his life, Marvin was very active in community service as a member of numerous boards including the Metropolitan Youth Commission, the St. Louis Board of Equalization, the Board of Building Appeals, the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging, and co-founder and coordinator of Available City-Wide Transportation for St. Louis.
Forever and always in God’s care, Marvin leaves to mourn a dear son, Marvin O. Teer Jr., a sister Vivian Galloway, and a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. Four siblings preceded him in death, brothers: Rufus, Rudy, and Lucious and a sister Velma Harbour.
