Maureece Lillian Monte Currie was born March 14, 1921, in the local hospital for “colored people” in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the first child of Eva Mae and Maurice John Curry, and sister of Carlton. The family moved to St. Louis, where they joined the newly-formed Scruggs Memorial CME Church.
Maureece attended St. Louis Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Sumner High School. She attended Stowe Teacher’s College and later was an instructor at Hubbard’s Business College. Maureece worked for the City of St. Louis for nearly four decades, serving first as executive secretary to the director of the School of Nursing at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, then later as director of Volunteer Services-City Hospital Division until her retirement in 1986.
Maureece took over the job of church secretary while serving on Usher Board No. 2 and the Missionary Society. She has served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and as a pianist for the Sunday School. She was the embodiment of Christian spirit, service, devotion and dedication.
She is survived by her only child, Frank Carleton Bacon, cousins Lorensieur Williams, Mary Wilkins, William Wilkins, Wauneen Younge, Marnice Baltimore, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and extended family.
