St. Louis Show Me Strong Families (SMSF), which is celebrating its 10th anniversary and National Literacy Month in September, recently partnered with Ready Readers to host “Pajama Story Time-Time” at The Heights recreational facility in Maryland Heights

The event promoted literacy among young at-risk children, with the participation of Parents as Teachers, a childhood development and parenting education home visiting program.

Constance Gully, president and CEO of Parents as Teachers, along with children’s book authors Nicole Daniels and Arika Parr from Ava and Mommy Publishing Co., read stories to children, creating an enchanting and educational atmosphere.

“The impact of this event goes far beyond the joy of reading,” said Gully.

“With 81% of families served by SMSF facing multiple high needs characteristics, such as substance use disorder, parental disabilities, interpersonal violence, mental health issues, or having an incarcerated parent, this initiative holds significant importance. Many of the teens and young adults are living in shelters or transitional housing, making the efforts of SMSF crucial in transforming their lives.

“As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Parents as Teachers, we are not just reading stories – we are writing new chapters of hope and opportunity for families across our community.”
