Remember the Jim Talent who annually flunks the NAACP’s civil rights report card? Wonder why Harold Crumpton, city NAACP honcho, was at the Rich Black Men for Talent show? Crumpton would probably flunk his own organization’s report card.

At a recent annual membership meeting, Crumpton shut down many members who had legitimate questions about the process of nominations for the branch’s top job. He cut them off like a boozer weaving in and out of traffic on Highway 40.

Crumpton also pushed an agenda item that the city branch give about 200 jailbirds in the workhouse a chance to vote in the NAACP November election. The question is, who paid for their memberships? Claude Brown Sr., first vice president and a retired labor executive, who some NAACP insiders say is toying with the idea of running against Crumpton, was stunned, insisting that the workhouse is not an affiliate of the St. Louis branch.

One of Crumpton’s detractors brought laughter to the crowd, when she quipped, “Since Crumpton blames the American newspaper for all his problems, is he going to work with the Evening Whirl, to help him reach those criminals? That’s precious.”
