The Team El-Amin joint campaign – and the fact that Boykins’ husband, Shaun A. Simms, is running for the seat she is leaving in the 60th District – makes for a strange and possibly unprecedented wild card in this primary, what one black politico is calling “a new kind of ticket splitter.” That is, many voters may turn away from a candidate they might otherwise have supported simply because they like that person’s spouse more (as a politician) and don’t think both a husband and a wife should be voted into elected office at the same time. It’s one of many strange things about this primary that makes many of the races so very hard to call.
