State Rep. Sharon Sanders Brooks writes that the EYE’s coverage of the Voter ID Bill left out an amendment she introduced requiring the Secretary of State to widely advertise the new burden. The amendment was the only Democrat amendment to be passed in the House, and remained on the bill through conference and is now law.
Her amendment provided: “Such advance notice [by the Secretary of State] shall include, at a minimum, the use of advertisements and public service announcements in print, broadcast television, radio, and cable television media, as well as the posting of information on the opening pages of the official state Internet web sites of the secretary of state and governor.”
“As I stated previously,” she writes, “my only hope is that my amendment helps not only the people of Kansas City, but the entire state, to be prepared for the harshest voting requirements since the poll tax.”
