Check this out about the August 8 primary results: Alderman Mike McMillan led the ticket that day with 25,821 votes. For a first-time, African-American candidate of only 35 years, that was a major accomplishment. Even though he ran unopposed, there were other citywide elected incumbents of over 20 years who didn’t get as many votes as he did. By campaigning all over the city with a combination of grass-roots activities, volunteers from everywhere, a professional campaign staff, high visibility and an aggressive fundraising strategy, he squashed any competition before they got started. He looks to be on his way to a higher office.

Marlene Davis, by the way, is rumored to be the pick to replace McMillan as 19th Ward alderman.
