Speculation among Missouri Democrats regarding the political future of Secretary of State Robin Carnahan was busy this week. She had a lunch date last week with U.S. Senator-elect Claire McCaskill. Almost certainly they talked about the organization of the state party, after Claire leaves for Washington. If Carnahan plans to file for governor, she would likely try to persuade Claire to keep control of the state party within her own organization rather than cede it to Attorney General Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon, who would be Carnahan’s main opponent in the primary. It is also possible that Carnahan will sit out that race and file for U.S. senator in 2010, when she should be in better health as she continues to recover from breast cancer. The state party should know if it doesn’t that very few black Democrats in Missouri will be enthusiastic about a “Jay for governor” campaign. Hopefully, McCaskill and Carnahan and others will have the sense to sit some black folks down at the table before the big deals are done.
