Former Mayor Vince Schoemehl Jr.’s sudden resignation as a member of the St. Louis Public Schools Board of Education might be a “whatever it is, it ain’t” move to position himself as a candidate to replace Carolyn Moody as director of the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission. A source told the EYE that before the ink was dry on Moody’s retirement letter, Schoemehl had already typed his resignation to the mayor and was lobbying to become Moody’s replacement. There is no question that Schoemehl would be a good salesperson, but the consensus in the hospitality industry is that Moody’s replacement needs to be a person with years of successful experience in the convention and tourism sales industry. Schoemehl’s detractors point to what they describe as his mishandling of the Grand Center Redevelopment Corporation, of which he is currently the president, and his “ready, fire, aim” approach to conflict resolution. Given that the appointment of Moody’s replacement will be made by political appointee’s of Mayor Francis G. Slay, County Executive Charlie Dooley and Governor Matt Blunt, Schoemehl’s chances of getting the job should not be underestimated.
