Even though it’s time for a dramatic change in the city’s school district, those in charge of the change are lacking in something we like around here: diversity.

The city’s public school district has an 82 percent African-American student population, but its fate will now most likely be determined by the political appointments of three white men.

The majority of teachers in this district are black, as are the majority of principals. Yet, three white men will get to pick a panel that will run the district.

In fact, the dysfunctional board of education has four duly elected African-American members, and its president is black. But, it’s up to three white men to do the choosing now.

The three-member transitional board would have total control over the budget and curriculum. It would include two people appointed locally – one by Slay, one by Shrewsbury and one eventually by Blunt.

Where’s the diversity there? Are any of these gentlemen even what could be called “friends of the black community”?

Shrewsbury could use his selection to win black-voter confidence. Slay might appoint someone he can control. Blunt (and Martin) would likely appoint someone looking out for the best interest of the Republican Party (and school choice), not the district.

Three white men at least temporarily in control of the state’s largest and blackest school district – it’s funny how that turned out.

The EYE feels the public should demand a consensus board that serve as a cohesive team that has African-American representation and has the requisite insight and vision to guide the district to improved outcomes.
