The “I didn’t do anything wrong because everybody is doing it” defense being touted by Texas Republican Congressman Tom DeLay has a familiar ring to it. The defense being put forth by DeLay was used by Craig Walker and several of his co-defendants regarding a contribution he made to Penny Alcott, a candidate for St. Louis comptroller in the 1993 Democratic primary. The other two candidates in the race were former comptroller Virvus Jones and St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Jim Shrewsbury. Walker was unable to prevail in his defense that “I didn’t do anything wrong because everybody is doing it,” even though supporting candidates to pull votes from another candidate was a tradition in St. Louis politics. Walker was convicted on far weaker evidence than what has been reported as evidence against DeLay, but then this is the state of “Misery” and DeLay is a good old boy in Texas.
