The city of St. Louis expects to complete more than 700 demolitions by the end of the first phase of its tornado recovery effort in North St. Louis.
More than 560 buildings have been demolished since work began in 2025. The city estimates 1,400 to 1,600 demolitions are needed following the May 16, 2025, tornado.
The first phase, funded by more than $30 million in local, state and federal money, will conclude in December. Demolitions will largely pause until early 2027, when the second phase begins. The city estimates an additional $40 million to $45 million is needed.
