The St. Louis American, along with its corporate partners and the Saint Louis Science Center, has created a somewhat unique and targeted classroom tool, which will run in the newspaper and online at stlamerican.com for the entire academic school year.
Research shows that students who use newspapers in the classroom score better on standardized tests, continue reading into adulthood, have greater civic understanding and are more engaged in their communities.
Because of the support of organizations such as Ameren Missouri, Centene, Emerson, Monsanto and World Wide Technologies, the American provides and delivers actual, physical newspapers FREE to 5,000 students in the Normandy School District and Saint Louis Public School District EACH WEEK.
ABOUT OUR “STEM” PAGE:
The page is particularly targeted to students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, and is focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education and literacy
ABOUT THE CONTENT
All content meets Missouri Learning Standards as well as Common Core State Standards. Each week will have its own theme (for example, “solar”).
FOR TEACHERS:
Besides using the STEM page as a tool, there are many other ways for teachers to use the newspaper for teaching and to improve test scores.
(Click on the “Teacher Resources” button.)
NOTE: Participating teachers can nominate their classroom for the “Classroom Spotlight” of the week section at nie@stlamerican.com.
