We are deeply troubled by the removal of anti-discrimination protections for LGBT individuals in Springfield, Missouri. No one should be discriminated against in the workplace, housing, or public accommodations because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, just as they should not be discriminated against based on race, religion, national origin or disability. The withdrawal of anti-discrimination protections that had been enacted merely six months ago represents an enormous and disheartening step backwards for Springfield.
We urge the city to reinstate these protections, which affect the lives of many Springfield residents and their families. We also encourage the Missouri legislature to pass strong, statewide legislation to prohibit discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity.
