This year has been my child’s first and last year of public schooling. Horrible, unorganized, rude, unprofessional, sad and unruly are some of the terms that come to mind when thinking about the experience.

My child initially attended Arrowpoint Elementary (Hazelwood School District) from September 2006 through December of that year. Arrowpoint opened its door in 2004. Due to Arrowpoint’s not meeting state performance guidelines for MAP, students had the opportunity to transfer to another school within the district.

After visiting Lawson School, the choice was made to transfer my child there. My child started Lawson January 2007. In February I had to once again become a paper chaser and detective in order to locate my child’s 2nd quarter report card from Arrowpoint.

Also, in February of this year my child was physically attacked by a student at Lawson in the classroom. She was hit in the head more than once with a backpack containing a hard item, possibly a book. The impact from one of the blows to her head caused her to hit her temple on the corner of the bookcase. I asked the principal at Lawson to place the report of the physical attack in my child’s record. That would inform schools outside of Lawson of the head trauma.

Prior to this year, my child’s educational experience was in the private sector. Everything that was calculated towards a grade was sent home. Parents were able to add up all the graded papers, which resulted in the report card grades. Documentation at its best. At what point will the public school system stop placing obstacles between concerned parents who seek proper education for our future, the children?
