Kudos for the editorial on Lewis Reed’s election. I am a graduate of U. City High and currently reside in Clayton, but like most area residents I remain vitally interested in the St. Louis municipal elections.

I’ve never met Reed but look forward to his tenure as president of the Board of Aldermen. I equally welcome the retirement of Jim Shrewsbury, whom I’ve also never met but believe has had enough time feeding at the public trough.

The rest of white St. Louis may be scared to death at the thought of an African-American majority on the board, but I am one white guy who welcomes it!

Racism has held St. Louis back for 150 years. Have we finally have reached the point where it’s the candidate’s ideas, rather than the color of his skin, that matters?

Here’s hope our grandkids can look back at 2007 as the year our city moved forward in the new millennium united, concerned only with progress and not power!

Thanks for keeping all of us informed.
