The United States Postal Service issued two postage stamps honoring Negro League baseball on July 15. The first day issue ceremony took place at the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City on the last day of the NAACP National Convention there.
One of the two stamps features a ball game in progress. The other honors Rube Foster, founder of the Negro National Leagues.
Foster was born in 1879 in Calvert, TX but spent most of his life in Chicago. He started the Chicago American Giants baseball team in 1911. He was a baseball player, team owner, manager and league executive.
Foster can be found in almost any book on Negro League Baseball, and there is at least on biography devoted to him. His life’s story would make a great movie.
