Amen to Ruth-Miriam Garnett’s “The Slavery Essays.” Lerone Bennett’s Before the Mayflower: The History of the American Negro, 1619-1964 tells of a Presbyterian church that purchased two female slaves in 1767 and without making any other purchases was able to sell 70 slaves in 1824.
